I participated in Steve McGinty's plein air workshop in Midway, Utah a couple weeks ago. Here is one of his step by step demo's. He uses a limited pallet of only 3 colors. It was an amazing experience to see him at work!

Great work Steve!

Here's a photo of the still life set-up. I prefer to paint by the natural north light that comes through my window.

I started with a thin wash using turp of burnt sienna and cad yellow med which gives it a warm medium value.
I just put in the rough drawing of where I want to place all the objects.

I focus on values only at this stage. I want to make sure I have 5 values and the tricky part will be keeping these values while adding color.

After I started putting in the color I thought the background was too dark and not cool enough. It is a real hassle when you have to change the color of the background after the painting is almost complete.

Thanks for looking.

Here are the paintings I did while at the Tooele Arts Festival. I really enjoyed just setting up each still life and painting while people watched.
